Do you know what is the main source of air pollution in buildings and homes? They are cleaning products! A bit of a paradox, isn't it? Considering that we buy them mainly to keep our household cleaner and safer. Instead, we are building a small private chemical dump at home :)
Many chemicals that are often found in most common cleaning products can cause various health complications (especially if we use them in large quantities), such as headaches, rashes or allergies. Some are even claimed to increase the risk of cancer…
But don't despair! There are plenty of safe options to keep your home clean. And it is almost unbelievably easy to make cleaning products that are friendly to nature and our health at home! You can polish the entire household with a minimum of basic ingredients, they are:
- Thyme
- Rosemary
- Wine vinegar (distilled vinegar or ordinary spirit vinegar)
- Salt
- Lemon
And they will also come in handy:
- Bottles, glasses, airtight packaging
- 2 cups of baking soda
- 2/3 cup of citric acid
- Favorite essential oils (up to 60 drops, the toilet deserves it! :)
- Sprayer with water or vanilla extract if you want to really smell the toilet
- Silicone molds
Mix baking soda and citric acid in a glass bowl. Be careful when working with acid and prefer to work with gloves, if you are sensitive you will do well to put a scarf or handkerchief over your nose and mouth while mixing. Wet the dry ingredients gradually with a spray bottle. One or two presses of the pump will be enough, the mixture should be almost dry. Stir. Add the essential oils and mix again. Stuff the mixture into molds and let it dry at least overnight. (Toilet bubbles don't have to be completely beautiful, so you can just mash them in your hand or with a spoon and let them harden on parchment paper). When they are dry, transfer them to an airtight container and use them when needed.
NOTE: When using sparkling water, it is better to take your time and flush the toilet until it is really bubbly. (I don't know what the pipes would say about sparkling water and I don't want to take your waterworks to task :))
- 1 part of salt
- 1 part baking soda
- Vinegar
- Boiling water
Mix equal parts salt and baking soda in a bowl. Pour the mixture into the clogged drain. Cover with vinegar and let everything stand for a few minutes. Finally, pour hot water into the waste.
TIP: Mix more of the salt and baking soda mixture straight away and put it in an airtight container. And when something clogs up again, you'll be ready!
- 1 cup of baking soda
- 1 cup of washing soda
- 1 cup of salt
- 1 cup citric acid
- 1 cup of water
- 1 cup of wine vinegar (for each wash)
- A silicone mold (for ice, chocolate) or a silicone mold for muffins
In a large bowl, mix the baking soda, baking soda, salt and citric acid well. Add a cup of water to the dry ingredients. Wait for the mixture to stop bubbling before mixing - this will take about a minute. Fill the mold with the mixture and press each piece thoroughly. Let it rest like this at least overnight. After knocking out of the molds, transfer the tablets to an airtight glass or box so that they do not get wet. Before starting the dishwasher, pour about half a cup of vinegar into the rinse aid hole, it will prevent stains on the dishes.
- 1 cup of water
- 1 cup of vinegar
- 2 tablespoons of baking soda
- 20 drops of essential oil
Simply mix everything in the bottle and shake well before each use.
- 1 cup of baking soda
- 1 cup of washing soda
- 20 drops of essential oil
Mix everything, transfer to an airtight container and use as needed during cleaning.
- 1 cup of castile soap
- 1 cup of water
- 15 drops of essential oil
Pour the soap, water and essential oil into a suitable bottle or container and wash.
- 1 cup of baking soda
- 1 cup of washing soda
- 1 cup of salt
Mix everything and use a heaping spoonful of powder for each wash. Use vinegar instead of polish.
- 1 cup of water
- 2 tablespoons of vinegar
- 15 drops of essential oil
Pour everything into a spray bottle and shake well before use.
- 1 part of olive oil
- 1 part of lemon juice
Apply both to a cloth and gently work into the surface of the furniture.
- 370 grams of Marseille soap flakes
- 6 cups of washing soda
- Essential oils – lemon is excellent, works as a degreaser, about 5 drops are enough for each wash
- Wine vinegar - optional to soften laundry, 1 cup with each wash
- Hydrogen peroxide - optional when washing white laundry, 1 cup per wash cycle
Mix the washing soda and Marseille soap in a large bowl. If you have one, use a food processor, chopper or blender to create a beautifully fine powder. You can either add the essential oil directly to the mixture, or keep it near the washing machine and use it every time you wash it (we prefer the second option). The dose for one washing cycle is 2-3 tablespoons of the mixture. If you wash in cold water, it is better to dissolve the powder in a little hot water beforehand. If you are washing whites, you can pour half a cup of hydrogen peroxide into the bleach compartment.
And if you don't dare to make your own powder or don't want to spend time buying a few ingredients and then measuring them out, there is nothing easier than getting an eco-friendly washing powder production kit, which will have everything you need.
