Characteristics

  • TiO2, titanium dioxide, titanium oxide
  • White powder, insoluble, stable
  • Titanium dioxide is often used as a pigment, due to its significant brightness and very high refractive index (n = 2.7).
  • The advantage of using it as a pigment is its resistance to UV radiation. It absorbs UV radiation and converts it into harmless heat.
  • Its high reflectivity, brightness and color constancy also determine it as a suitable material for use in the form of thin coatings on special optics such as dielectric mirrors.
  • Insoluble
  • Raw material for cosmetic production.

Use

  • It is used as a pigment ensuring the whiteness and opacity of paints, coatings, plastics, paper, inks, food, cosmetics and medicines (e.g. tablets or toothpaste).
  • In cosmetics, it is added to creams as a pigment and thickener. It is also used as a pigment in tattoos.
