Propanediol, or 1,3-propanediol, is one of these inconspicuous helpers. It is not an ingredient you would buy for just one function. In a formulation, it helps moisturize, dissolve active ingredients, improve spreadability and reduce unpleasant stickiness.

When a moisturizing serum is too sticky

You may have already made a serum with an excellent composition that nevertheless remained sticky on the skin after application. This often happens in formulations with a higher glycerin content or certain gel-forming ingredients.

Glycerin is a proven and effective humectant, but at higher concentrations it can be sticky. Propanediol tends to feel lighter, smoother and more pleasant on the skin. It is therefore often unnecessary to choose only one of these ingredients – they also work very well together.
