Instructions

  1. Prepare the containers and wicks. Stick a wick to the centre of each aluminium tin using an adhesive wick sticker. Secure the wick at the top with a stabilising stick or holder so that it remains nicely centred.
  2. Melt the wax. Weigh the soy-coconut wax into a heat-resistant container and slowly melt it in a bain-marie. Heat gently until completely liquid.
  3. Allow the wax to cool slightly. Remove the melted wax from the heat and let it cool briefly. Add the essential oils at approximately 60–70 °C, or follow the recommendation of the wax manufacturer.
  4. Add the essential oils. Add lemon eucalyptus, Java citronella and lavender to the wax. Stir for 1–2 minutes so that the fragrance disperses well throughout the wax.
  5. Pour the wax into the containers. Carefully pour the wax into the prepared tins. Leave a few millimetres of free space at the top.
  6. Allow the candles to set. Do not move the containers. Once the wax begins to look matte but is not yet completely firm, you can gently decorate the surface with dried lavender.
  7. Trim the wick. After the wax has completely hardened, trim the wick to approximately 5 mm.
  8. Allow the candles to cure. Ideally, let the candles rest for 7–14 days before lighting them for the first time. The fragrance will blend better in the wax and the candle will burn more evenly.
  9. First burn. During the first burn, let the candle burn long enough for the wax to melt all the way to the edges of the container. This usually takes 2–3 hours. This will prevent tunnelling around the wick.

Function of the individual ingredients

  • Soy-coconut wax forms the base of the candle. It melts well, carries the fragrance pleasantly and is suitable for making container candles.
  • Lemon eucalyptus provides a fresh lemon-herbal fragrance. It is used in summer blends for its clean and distinctive character.
  • Citronella  is a classic ingredient for outdoor summer candles. Its citrusy, grassy fragrance is fresh to people, while mosquitoes generally do not find it pleasant.
  • Lavender softens and rounds out the blend. It adds a calmer herbal note to the candle and helps combine the lemon fragrances into a harmonious whole.

Safe candle use

Burn the candle outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. Never leave it burning unattended and do not place it in a draught or near flammable materials. Use dried herbs on the surface only in small amounts and away from the wick.

Once the candle has cured for a few days, take it outside for an evening gathering. Citronella, lemon eucalyptus and lavender create a fresh herbal fragrance that belongs beautifully to summer – it makes our time at the table more pleasant and makes things a little more difficult for mosquitoes.
