Why natural deodorant

With a balanced healthy diet and sufficient drinking regime, we can influence a lot in our body, including how strongly we smell. In some cases, however, a little more help is needed. Sure, regular antiperspirants are great. Until we realize what's in them. Aluminum and other bad substances enter the body through the skin in the armpits through deodorants. And we don't want that.

So what should we do?

Either sweat and smell bad, or settle for useless aluminum? Isn't there another option?

Fortunately, yes! A deodorant made from natural ingredients that you can make yourself at home. It will take a little more time to make than running to the drugstore, but the homemade product will last much longer and is much healthier!

Some people even rely only on pure coconut oil or baking soda and use them instead of deodorant. So if you don't feel like making it, maybe try this simple option. However, baking soda itself can be irritating for some and sometimes causes a rash, so always test it on a small piece of skin before the first "proper" use. And if you don't like this option either, take a look at the offer of ready-made natural deodorants, you will definitely choose! For example, 100 natural deodorant Onnenton with spruce pitch, which does not contain soda, is also suitable for sensitive irritated skin or after shaving. Or try this natural cream with palmarosa, lavender and tea tree.

Underarm detox

What please? Yes, if you have been used to using regular deodorants, before using natural ones, it is advisable to clean your armpits and get rid of the deposits of bad substances from antiperspirants. This will incredibly speed up the process of getting used to natural deodorant and increase its effectiveness many times over.

How To

Mix a tablespoon of bentonite (read more about it in the article about miracle clays) with a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and a teaspoon or two of water and create a paste. Apply a thin layer to your armpits and leave for 5-20 minutes. If this is your first time detoxing, start with 5 minutes and gradually increase the time. Your armpits may turn a little red, don't worry, the redness will subside after a while. However, if the mixture causes pain on your skin, wash it off immediately. After the time has passed, rinse the clay off in the shower or simply wipe it off with a damp cloth. Do this for as long as necessary (until the natural deodorant causes you discomfort), at first two to three times a week, then every day.

Essential oils (and other substances) suitable for deodorant

Essential oils not only replace synthetic fragrances and keep you fresh and fragrant all day long, but they also have antibacterial properties.

Not all essential oils are suitable for making deodorant, avoid cinnamon, oregano, or cloves. On the contrary, it is great to use:

  • Evergreen cypress: strengthens immunity, has an antiseptic effect, constricts blood vessels (locally) and is widely used for problems with excessive sweating, goes well with geranium, sage and lavender
  • Sage: antifungal, antiperspirant, lowers blood pressure, harmonizes, improves mood, calms
  • Bergamot: soothing, has great cleansing properties, fresh, fruity, antibacterial
  • Palmarosa: antibacterial, antiseptic, antifungal, soothing, toning, refreshing, natural deodorant, optimizes sebaceous gland function
  • Lavender: has an antiseptic effect, regenerates skin cells, relieves muscle tension after exercise, soothes, natural deodorant
  • Camphor: antibacterial, antiseptic, harmonizes, strengthens, relieves pain, improves blood circulation in the skin, deodorant
  • Tea tree: antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, stimulating, refreshing
  • Bisabolol: an active substance found in several plants, including chamomile, it is strong, soothing and healing, highly effective even at low doses, suitable for irritated skin, has anti-inflammatory, antifungal and antibacterial effects
  • Grapefruit seed extract: antibacterial and antifungal spectrum, prevents the development of bacteria, yeast, mold in cosmetics
  • Bacti-pur: active deodorant, antibacterial, very well tolerated by the skin, prevents the formation of body odor, regulates the production of sebum

Making homemade deodorant

Because everyone likes different products, we don't have just one recipe for you, but three! For each one, choose the scent and combination of essential oils according to your imagination or leave the deodorant completely fragrance-free. Whatever you like!

Solid natural deodorant without baking soda

Slowly melt the butter, oil and beeswax in a water bath (pour water into a pot and put it on the stove, slide a bowl or an old mason jar into the pot and that's it), stir the mixture occasionally, this will help the beeswax. Turn off the stove and let the mixture cool for a while. Add the tapioca or starch, diatomaceous earth, vitamin E and essential oils. Mix well so that everything is well combined. Slide the mixture into a deodorant container and let it harden.

Homemade deodorant with shea butter

In a water bath, melt the shea butter and coconut oil. Remove from the heat, add the baking soda and tapioca or cornstarch and mix well. Add the essential oils and pour into a glass or other container. If you want a deodorant that really looks like deodorant, let the mixture cool a little and then press it into a deodorant container. Deodorant does not need to be stored in the refrigerator unless it is really hot. So in the summer, move it somewhere cool. It will also refresh you nicely when used.

Note: The deodorant may take a few hours to completely harden (this could be due to the baking soda). Don't worry, it's fine. If you're in a hurry, put it in the fridge for a few minutes to speed up the hardening process.

Coconut Simple Deodorant

If you don't feel like taking a bath or don't have shea butter at home, this simple and quick option will be just right.

In a bowl, mix tapioca (or starch) with baking soda. Add coconut oil and whisk until well combined. Add essential oils if desired. Store in a glass jar.

What to think about

Less is more

The most important thing! When using natural deodorant, remember that the composition is much more concentrated than that of regular deodorants, which often contain water and other substances that reduce their intensity. So use less of the natural ones.

Don't overdo it with the amount of essential oils either. A few drops of essential oil are enough. If we overdo it with them, they could be irritating.

If your skin is more sensitive, reduce the amount of baking soda (or omit it altogether) and replace it with tapioca.

Stains on clothes

This point overlaps with the previous one. If your natural deodorant is leaving stains on your clothes, you're probably applying more than you need. A very small amount is all you need. But if you can't remove it and your shirt is still dirty, try leaving the deodorant in the fridge and waiting three or four minutes after applying it before getting dressed.

Rash

Baking soda can be aggressive for some and cause a rash. If this is your case, it will be better if you stop using natural deodorant and try to adjust the composition of the product. Reducing the soda in the recipe by half may help. It is also possible to leave it out completely. It is quite possible that you also react badly to one of the essential oils, test that too. Rashes are also often caused by long-term use of regular deodorants, which have "contaminated" the armpits with chemicals. Detox will help with this.

Shaving

Baking soda may sting a little on irritated skin after shaving, so be sure to wait at least 20 minutes after shaving before applying deodorant.
