Carbomer is like a thickener for water. It is useful when you want your homemade cosmetics to be not thin and “liquid”, but to have a gel consistency.

Carbomer is a raw material that is mainly used in home cosmetics as a thickener in the water phase. It will help you turn ordinary water or floral water into a gel that does not drip. This makes it suitable for making gel serum, light skin gel or body gel.

The big advantage is that you only need a small amount (typically a few tenths of a percent). In practice, this means that even a small package will last you a lot of products. Carbomer is not added to water as a “soluble salt”, but must first be well dispersed in water and allowed to hydrate. If you pour it all at once, it may form lumps, so it is better to pour it slowly, stirring.

It often helps if you first mix it in glycerin and only then add it to the water.

To really thicken and form a gel, it is necessary to adjust pH, i.e. neutralize the mixture TAG56⟫. In practice, this is done drop by drop and with pH control to achieve the appropriate value.

Carbomer is also suitable for creams and gel-creams because it can solidify the water part of the formula and improve the consistency. The resulting cream is then more stable and spreads more pleasantly. It is also used where you want small particles in the product to be better held and not to settle to the bottom so quickly. It is mainly intended for water-based formulas, it will not work in oil. For water-based products, it is common to count on a preservative to make the product microbially stable. Carbomer will therefore be of most help wherever you want to turn water into a gel or improve texture and emulsion stability.

  • Polymers with thickening and suspending effects. They are made from the highest quality raw materials.
  • It has high gelling ability.
  • Additives are polymers with a thickening and suspending effect for the aqueous phase. These strong gelling agents provide stability to the finished products.
  • High-performance gelling agents for the aqueous phase.

Use

  • It is ideal for preparing transparent aqueous and hydroalcoholic gels.
  • Suitable for all types of cosmetics.
  • Normal dosage 0.1 - 0.5% depending on the type of desired viscosity of the formulation.
  • Carbomer must be thoroughly mixed and hydrated. Raising the pH to >6.0 gives a gel structure.

Carbomer 940 is a synthetic polymer with a significant thickening and suspending effect in the aqueous phase. In home cosmetics it is mainly used for:

creation of clear aqueous and hydroalcoholic gels (e.g. gel serums, light gels), thickening of the aqueous phase in emulsions (creams, milks) and improving their stability, reducing runoff, improving spreadability and the “gel” feel of the product. The result is a more stable texture, better consistency and the ability to create a truly clear gel even at low concentration.

If you mix cosmetics at home and want the result to look "finished" (and not like thin water), Carbomer 940 is one of those ingredients that will make the biggest difference in the smallest dosage.

Why is it worth it?

I want a clear gel that holds its shape. With Carbomer you can make a really transparent gel serum or gel for the skin/body that doesn't run and has a smooth consistency.

I want more stable creams and gel-creams. It can solidify the water phase and help the emulsion "hold together", so the cream is more stable and more pleasant to spread.

I don't want to deal with large batches of ingredients. It is typically only used at around 0.1–0.5%, so even a small package will last a very long time.

I want to control the density. Depending on the amount and pH, you can adjust whether you want a light gel or a significantly thicker texture.

It is suitable for several types of products. It is not a raw material "for one thing" - you can use it in gels, serums, gel-creams and to adjust the consistency of some washing gels.

What is good to know

It only works after neutralization / pH adjustment. Without it, the gel will not fully form. In practice, this means that during production you will measure the pH and add the neutralizer drop by drop.

It is mainly for water-based formulas. It does not work in oil – it is intended for the aqueous phase (or hydroalcoholic).

Water-based products include a preservative. If you make water-based gels/creams, you usually can't do without a preservative

When will it be most useful

if you want a gel serum instead of an emulsion,

if you want a light gel texture of a cream,
