What is a cleansing balm?

A cleansing balm is quite simply an oil cleanser for the skin. There are always three basic components in the cleansing balm – oil softeners; a raw material that ensures the mixing of oil with water and thus easy washing of oil with impurities/makeup from the skin; and a thickener that makes the liquid mixture pleasantly balmy and easy to use.

Some cleansing balms also contain a water phase. But the one we produce today is completely anhydrous.

How to use it?

If you use the cleansing balm to remove make-up, it's great to apply it to dry skin and massage everything in nicely. You can also use this balm to remove your eye make-up without any worries - it doesn't sting at all and works great even with waterproof mascara. Dissolved make-up can then easily be washed off with water without the need to scrub the skin or wipe it off the face with a moistened cloth or a make-up remover pad.

For gentler cleansing of the skin, you can first mix a small amount of balm with lukewarm water in the palm of your hand, create a pleasant milky emulsion and then clean the skin with it. Afterwards, wash everything with water or wipe with a cloth or tampon. Both uses are very pleasant!

What do we put in it?

The composition is more than simple, but perfectly tuned and very effective. We will use the popular caprylis - a cheap, really light and very durable emollient that we recommend having at home - it is great for diluting thicker oils, in hair serums and elsewhere.

We will add white mineral oil - a soft and well-tolerated oil, which is often and popularly used in cleaning products or in children's cosmetics. If you don't want to use mineral oil, which we understand, replace it with castor oil, avocado oil, or maybe grapeseed oil.

In order for the balm to mix with water, an emulsifying wax must be added. We reached for the very user-friendly and cheap emulsifying wax NF, whose important feature is that it does not sting the eyes at all.

We thicken everything with our beloved cetearyl alcohol, which turns the liquid mixture into a rich, creamy, and extremely smooth thing.

So let's go!

What does it take?

- 20 grams of caprylis

- 11.8 grams of white mineral oil or castor oil

- 5.2 grams of cetearyl alcohol

- 4 grams of emulsifying wax NF

How to do it?

Prepare a water bath - pour about 3cm of water into the saucepan and let it heat up on a medium temperature on the stove. Weigh all the ingredients into a heat-resistant container and let everything dissolve in a water bath.

While the ingredients are melting in the hot water bath, prepare an ice bath - put a few ice cubes in a bowl larger than the container with the ingredients and cover with cold water.

When all the dissolved ingredients are liquid, remove the container with the mixture from the water bath, mix everything well and place the entire container in the ice bath. Stir the mixture, carefully wipe the faster-setting balm on the sides of the container, and as soon as the mixture starts to resemble pudding, remove the container from the ice bath and stir the balm in it for a while longer.

Once the mixture is pleasantly stiff, but still runny, pour it into the chosen container. Reach for a container with a wider neck, from which you can comfortably scoop up the balm. And that's it!
